The Jaunty Park Golf Society – Rules
The fundamental and over-riding rule of the Jaunty Park Golf Society is that it is a friendly
society and that golf should be played in the spirit of the game. When playing in a society
competition members should adhere to all rules of the host Golf Club (they will usually be found
on the reverse of the scorecard); should they oppose the rules as set out by the Society below,
direction should be sought from a committee member prior to commencing play from the first
tee. During society golf days, medals and competitions, members are required to comply with
the following at all times;
1. The society consists of a maximum of 28 players and will look to maintain a minimum
of 24 members. Should a member leave, a waiting list for new members on a first come
basis and is held by the Secretary. The society is open to all parties, but prospective
members must be forwarded and seconded by current members of the society. Once
forwarded a vote will take place at the next available society meeting for the member to
be accepted / declined to the society.
2. Upon being accepted to the society a £20 joining fee will be payable to the Treasurer.
This will be refunded to the member upon leaving the society.
3. Subs are payable at £1.00 a week in order to raise society funds for prizes on major
days and it is expected that members will make best efforts to pay the treasurer at
monthly meetings and on golf days. The maximum period to be in arrears is 6 weeks,
after which point it will be at the discretion of the society whether the member will be
asked to leave. If the member leaves the society any outstanding monies will be
deducted from the £20 joining fee and the balance returned to the existing member.
4. Each member is allocated a membership / bonus ball number. If the members Lotto
Bonus Ball number is pulled from the Saturday evening Lotto draw the member will win
50% or that weeks Society takings. For example – if the membership consists of 25
members this would be £12.50. The other 50% goes towards the Major Day’s prize
fund.
5. Society meetings take place monthly and are generally set for the first Thursday in
each month, with the current venue being The Birley pub. In order for any motion to be
carried the society operates a quorum ruling whereby there must be a minimum
attendance of nine members for voting to take place. The society AGM will take place
in November with date to be confirmed each year.
6. All members must attend at least 1 meeting per quarter within a calendar year. If any
member does not meet this requirement they will not be entitled to their end of year
christmas spirit drink which is paid for out of society funds.
7. Bonus ball winnings can only be collected at monthly meetings to encourage members
attendance. If a member wins the bonus ball from the Saturday evening Lotto draw but
it is not collected within that calendar year the money will go back into the society.11/12/2014 2
8. Members are encouraged to wear their Jaunty Park Golf Society shirts at all times
whilst attending a society day. Shirts must always be maintained to an acceptable
standard, being washed and ironed before use. Players are required to be tidy at all
times on the course. Gents should wear suitable trousers or tailored shorts and shirts
with sleeves and collar. Jeans are not acceptable.
9. If a player has an official club handicap and a society handicap, then they must play off
the lower of the two. This must be notified to the Secretary. If a new member does not
carry an official handicap they must provide two cards signed and dated by a society
member, before obtaining a society handicap. All new society members must play two
medals before being eligible to win Golfer of the Year points or win prizes on Major
days. If a new society member is ineligible to win points they will have no standing in
the points table for that medal, and their position will be awarded to the next in line.
This does not prevent new members from playing on golf days.
10. The winner of any competition Medal / Major will be dropped at least 1 full shot. If after
calculating a members net score after taking current handicap and par of the course
into consideration they warrant more than a 1 shot drop, their handicap will be adjusted
on the following basis:
Group 4 = 21 to 28: Will be dropped .4 for every stroke below par of the course
Group 3 = 16 to 21: Will be dropped .3 for every stroke below par of the course
Group 2 = 9 to 16: Will be dropped .2 for every stroke below par of the course
Group 1 = 0 to 9: Will be dropped .1 for every stroke below par of the course
Any member scoring within 3 shots over the par of the course will not incur any
handicap increase. Any member who exceeds 3 shots over par of the course will be
raised .1. (Full Stop).
11. Any clarification on the handicap system should be sought from the Secretary.
12. a. Members may bring guests to Society medals, Major days and The Christmas
Classic.
b. Guests will be put in the ‘tee-off’ draw for the start sequence on the first tee. If the
member is not drawn in the same group as their guest they may swap with another
member in the draw. If no member wishes to swap, the groupings will remain as drawn.
c. Guests will not be eligible to play in the Society competition nor be considered for
any prizes. Members should also ascertain the playing handicap of their guest and
advise the Secretary prior to the day. Members will also be held accountable for the
conduct of their guest on the day.
13. Failure to attend or give reasonable notice of being able to attend a society day having
previously committed to do so will lead to the member being expected to meet any
costs incurred.
14. The society plays on a rotation of the following courses for medal days, with the fixture
list being determined at the beginning of the calendar year:
a. Birley Wood
b. Tinsley Park
c. Beauchief Hall
d. Tapton Park
12. For a medal to count towards Golfer of the Year points there must be a minimum of
nine members returning cards.
13. All players should be at the relevant course no later than 30 minutes before the first tee
time. 11/12/2014 3
14. All society medal competitions will be played using the stroke play scoring system
utilising the member’s current society handicap as recorded by the Secretary. The
format for play on society major days will be at the discretion of the committee member
whose day it is. The Christmas Classic will be played using the Stableford scoring
system. If any member is unsure of either scoring system please consult a member of
the committee prior to teeing off.
15. During society competitions, players must swap their card with one of their playing
partners and record both their opponents score (Player A) and their own score
(Markers Score) on the scorecard during the round. Before submission of the cards to
the committee at the end of the round, scores should be recorded on each card and
both player and marker are required to sign the respective cards. Incomplete or
unsigned cards will be immediately disqualified.
16. During society Stableford competitions, a player MUST pick up if they cannot score on
a hole. For most players this means that 3 over par on a hole is the maximum score.
17. A ball may be searched for, for a maximum of five (5) minutes. After the allotted period
of time the provisional ball (if the first was lost off the tee) must be played.
18. ‘Gimmes’ on the putting green will not be given in any form of competition.
19. Any objections or complaints about the event in which you partake should be raised
with a member of the committee on the day of the event. The committee will then
investigate and collectively decide on what action, if any, needs to be taken.
20. In the event of a draw for position, count back of the stroke play score or Stableford
score over the inward nine holes will be used. If a tie still exists the score over the last
three holes (16, 17, and 18) will be used. Should there still be a draw, the score of the
next three holes will be used (13, 14, 15) and so on until a winner can be identified.
21. If a player is unsure of the rules when about to play a shot, the common sense
approach is that if all playing partners are in agreement with the proposed course of
action, then the player should play on as normal. If there is disagreement the player
should play the shot in the manner he / she think is correct, following which the players
score card should be endorsed to this effect. The scorecard should be referred to at
least two members of the Committee for verification at the end of the round.
22. All players should be present at the appropriate tee and ready to play at least 10
minutes before their tee time.
23. The Society asks that all players ensure their mobile phones are switched to ‘silent’
and/or ‘vibrate’ mode while on the course and during play. The Society accepts
however that emergency calls may have to be made / accepted during play.
24. Slow play is an annoyance to players during a round of golf and players are reminded
that it is their responsibility to keep up with the group in front – not just in front of the
group behind. If there is a loss of one clear hole, players are obliged to call through the
group behind. To help combat slow play, the Society operates a ‘play when ready’
policy, although common sense and player agreement apply.
25. Players should help their playing partners by remaining silent while they play their
shots, helping to establish the line of the shot, and as necessary, helping to look for
their ball if it is not immediately found. In such cases the limit of time for the search is 5
minutes.
26. The Society asks that players repair their pitch marks during the course of a round.
Players are also asked to repair other pitch marks where these are easily visible.
Similarly, scuff marks on the green should be repaired where possible – after 11/12/2014 4
completion of the hole. The Society also asks that players rake bunkers when they
have completed play from such a position.
27. Golfer of the year points will be awarded on medal days and Major days – the
Christmas Classic does not carry any points, but will count towards members’ society
handicaps. The point system is as follows:
a. First place = 8 points
b. Second place = 7 points
c. Third place = 6 points
d. Fourth = 5 points
e. Fifth = 4 points
f. Sixth = 3 points
g. Seventh = 2 points
h. Eighth = 1 point
28. If any member wishes to revise any of the rules noted above this must be done at the
AGM and must be forwarded and seconded prior to being put to a vote by the society.
29. A fifth major will be played in the year, to be known as The Handicap Secretaries day.
This will be played in April or September of each year, and the course will be no more
than 25 miles away from Sheffield. The format of the day will be match play, to be
played in teams or in singles, with this being determined on the day by the serving
Handicap Secretary. Only the winners of the individual matches will be awarded a prize
– the number of prizes obviously being dictated by the format of the day.
30. In the event of a medal being cancelled due to bad weather, that months medal will be
attempted to be re-arranged up to a maximum of two weeks later. If this scenario
arises, the JPGS Secretary will initially ascertain if there are a sufficient number of
members wishing for the medal to be re-arranged.
If over 9 members do attend a re-arranged medal this will count towards GOY points. If
a re-arranged medal clashes with a medal day at a SIV course that some JPGS
members intend or wish to play in these members will need to decide prior to teeing off
which medal they intend to play in (i.e. club medal or JPGS medal).
